Shelled Corn Available for Pheasants

Due to the protracted cold temperatures and blowing and drifting snow, we will again be offering free shelled corn. Effective Saturday February 8th, the Blue Earth County Chapter of Minnesota Pheasants, Inc. will make available a gravity box wagon for self serve distribution of corn. The wagon will be located in the MinnStar parking lot on Main Street in downtown Good Thunder - next to the drive thru teller lane.

This is on the honor sytem, please be thoughtful of others that would also like to take advantage of this offer. You will need to bring your own containers. Remember, corn is heavy so bring smaller containers or bags. A bushel of corn weights 55 to 60 pounds. We will attempt to have nylon bags next to the wagon for you to use but bring your own containers in the event we're unable to get the bags.

Please don't feed pheasants directly off a roadway as this draws the birds to the road and often ends up with them being hit by passing cars. If possible, place the corn off the road in a windswept area that will not drift over with snow. We will monitor the wagon and fill it as needed but please take only what you can effectively put out for pheasants. We hope to get participation from a broad countywide area

We wish to thank MinnStar Bank for their continued support
and for allowing us to place the wagon in their lot!! We would also like to thank John Caven for the use of his wagon - we appreciate it!

And, thanks to all of you for your help in getting this corn out!

2013 Minnesota Pheasant Index down 29 percent from 2012

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is reporting that the 2013 roadside survey indicates a 29 percent decline in birds in the pheasant range. Sighting reduced enrollment in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program, Reinvest in Minnesota and Wetlands Reserve Programs coupled with a cool and wet spring as primary reasons for the decline.   In addition, South Dakota has reported a 64 percent decrease in its brood survey. North Dakota’s most-recent rooster crowing count is down 11 percent from last year. And Iowa reported a 19 percent decrease in its August roadside count.

Expanded Walk-in Access Program Adds Additional 6,000+ Acres

Hunters heading to western and south-central Minnesota will have access to an additional 6,083 acres of hunting land this fall as the Walk-In Access program grows to more than 20,000 acres and the number of counties increases from 19 to 28.  This fall hunters must purchase a $3 Walk-In Access validation on their small game or deer license to legally access land enrolled in the program. The DNR added the validation so it can learn how many hunters use Walk-In Access lands as well as where and how those lands are used.

Maps of all sites will be available for viewing at by mid-August. Printed atlases of Walk-In Access sites will be distributed across the Walk-In Access area or will be available by calling the DNR Information Center at 651-296-6157 or toll-free 888-646-6367.
